NDP calls on government to allow families to reunite

OTTAWA – The NDP is calling on the Liberal government to ease the restrictions preventing the reunification of committed couples and families separated during the COVID-19 crisis.

“The rules need to be more flexible to allow committed couples who don’t meet the government’s rigid definitions of married or common-law to be reunited in Canada,” said NDP Critic for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Jack Harris.

Two weeks ago, Harris wrote to Minister Bill Blair calling on the government to amend the rules, while requiring proper documentation and ensuring all existing precautions are fully applied.

“We have yet to hear back from Minister Blair, but these restrictions have been in place for more than four months and this issue needs to be addressed quickly,” added Harris.
